When Ecolab 0157: H7 was discovered in 1982 in the US, it was considered a deadly human pathogen. This is as a result of an outbreak of bloody diarrhea that was associated with contaminated hamburger meat (Breuer, Henkel, Shapiro, et al, 1999).
Knowing the pathogen and its characteristics (including modes of transmission) where do you think was the most likely point of contamination in the production of the sprouts?
The most likely point of contamination was from the seeds; each farmer harvested the seeds and cleaned at the same processing plant. These seeds were stored in bags, and there were no further processing done (Taormina, Beuchat, & Slutsker, 1999).
In inspecting the alfalfa fields and harvesting process, what possible points of contamination should be considered?
The inspection of alfalfa revealed that there could be three possible sources of contamination; it could have either originated from the water used for irrigation or from cattle or feces from the deer. Manure was not usually applied to alfalfa fields, but cattle were common in these areas. The alfalfa fields were just adjacent to the cattle feed. Therefore, manure might have been dumped onto to the alfalfa field or to the water from the neighboring fields. The contaminated manure might have been used to irrigate the alfalfa fields. Additionally, since some farms were situated next to the wildlife area, there could be possibility of deer faeces causing the contamination (Taormina, Beuchat, &Slutsker, 1999).
What interventions/control measures would you suggest? Why?
Some of the control measures include removing all the remaining seeds and alfalfa sprouts from the market. Anyone who had purchased sprouts from the affected area needs to be instructed on how to destroy them (Taormina, Beuchat, & Slutsker, 1999). There is need to examine the seeds used for sprouting if they came from the same producers. If so, any seed used intended for human consumption, needs to be removed from...
