In this study, the researchers tried to create a new method of determining the Strength of Recommendation (SoR) relative to the given guidelines in clinical practice. Basically, Strength of Recommendation refers to how strong a particular statement being delivered towards an audience, with regards to its impact (Magicapp.org, n.d.). This concept could be divided into different categories based on the data in question. As some studies used the categorizations between strong and weak, this research categorized things based on how strong an expert opinion based on the underlying the research evidence. In conceptualizing this study, Roddy, et al. (2006) asked the following research questions: (1) What are the current tools and methodologies is assessing clinical practice guidelines and how do they assess them? Do these existing mechanisms allow the SoR to be reviewed if for recommendations for which the randomized control trials are unethical?
In the study, the independent variable is the current tools and methodologies used in assessing the Strength of Recommendation (SoR). On the other hand, the dependent variables are the SoR in the clinical practice and its underlying research.
As for the experimental design, the authors used a “Delphi technique in producing the SoR for the role of exercise therapy in the management of osteoarthritis of the knee” (Roddy, et al., 2006). More specifically, 10 recommendations, grouped from A-D, were produced with regards to the methods for managing osteoarthritis management of the knee and the hip. These expert opinions which were taken by the researchers were taken and were treated as a quantitative data, so as to fit the models of measurement stated above. The use of other assessment tools was intended in determining if the VAS 10-cm tool, is much better in trying to accomplish the task, which is determining the SoR over traditional methods. In order to further substantiate the results, ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) was done by the authors. This statistical tool is very important in order to make sure that the results found in comparing to variables are “statistically significant” and not due to a simple coincidence.
