Summary of the Four IOM Messages and Significance to Nursing Practice
The IOM report identified the need for changes in the nursing profession to enhance the delivery of care. To facilitate the transformation in the nursing profession, the IOM report outlined four key messages as summarized below (Green, 2018):
1 Nurses should practice at the full extent of their education and training- The central idea with this message was to transform the nursing practice to enhance access to care by eliminating the restrictive scope of practice among advanced practice nurses.

4 Better data collection and information infrastructure to enhance workforce planning and policy-making- The report recommended improved access to current data on the healthcare workforce needs to facilitate planning.
These key messages can transform the nursing profession through the unrestricted scope of practice, improved education, full engagement of nurses in changing the healthcare systems, and better planning of the workforce to address nurse shortages and other workforce issues facing the nursing profession.
Influence of IOM Report on Nursing
The IOM report has had a direct influence on nursing education and leadership. For instance, it has made more people appreciate nurses who have a baccalaureate and other higher degrees, such as advanced practice degrees. According to Green (2018), this has increased the demand for nurses with advanced degrees in nursing. Also, as revealed by Hasmiller et al. (2020), the IOM report has led to an increase in the number of nurses with doctoral degrees as well as the number of nursing residency programs. The report has also influenced leadership by preparing more nurses for new roles and providing them with essential skills (Green, 2018). These skills and new roles are an opportunity for nurses to engage in leadership not only in the nursing profession but also in the healthcare system. BSN-prepared nurses are now closer to achieving advanced degrees (Hasmiller et al., 2020), and as such, they have an opportunity to become advanced practice or doctoral nurses.
