In the nursing profession, the research culture has been evolving since the period of Florence Nightingale. The International Council of Nurses (ICN, 2012) defines evidence based-practice (EBP) as a professional approach intended to reduce theory to practice gap. There has been a perception where the nursing profession was viewed as an apprenticeship. However, in the 1950s, nursing research started to advance. Nightingale, for instance, began to apply statistics in understanding patients' mortality and morbidity. The number of deaths was compared between healthcare organizations and used to evaluate patient outcomes. Research has evolved as educational programs are developed to address a particular nursing perspective. These programs assist students to focus on nursing problems and concepts instead of medical problems and ideas.
