Introduction
Purnell (2013) has defined culturally competent nursing care as the advancement of the awareness of personal existence and thoughts, sensations, and the surroundings without permitting it to have an unnecessary persuasion on individuals of diverse backgrounds. He says it is the demonstration of awareness and understanding of a client’s way of life, and appreciating and relating to the differences in culture while designing care that is similar to the patient’s belief.
The Expert Panel on Global Nursing and Health (2010) came up with a set of principles for cultural competence in nursing profession. The expert panel developed the standards together with the Transcultural Nursing Society. Here we look at four of those guidelines out of a list of 12. They include Social Justice, Critical Reflection, Knowledge of Cultures and Culturally Competent Practice.
The set of standards stipulates that the applied ideology of social justice direct choices of nurses in relation to a patient and family, the community, and other healthcare practitioners. It adds that nurses must acquire skills in leadership to campaign for socially just policies. For example, a culturally competent nurse must care for a patient in disregard of their economic status, race, ethnicity, disability, citizenship, age or sexual orientation.
At the same time, culturally competent practice demands that nurses must critically engage in reflection of their personal ideals, viewpoint, and cultural heritage. The reflection helps them to have an understanding of how these qualities and issues can impact culturally harmonious nursing care. Nurses must examine personal, cultural values that carry the potential of being in conflict with other's values and result in hindrance of therapeutic relationships and efficient outcomes of patient care. Some patients may require a particular type of diet based on cultural foods. A nurse must be able to understand why such foods are important to the patient and strive to accommodate that in their care (Commission of the Public’s Health System, 2010).
Knowledge of cultures is also an important standard for nursing care that has cultural competence. Nurses must acquire knowledge of the beliefs and principles, viewpoints and family practices of families and communities for whom they provide care. This agreement must include knowledge of the multifaceted variables that affect the attainment of health. For instance, nurses who tend to cultural groups that mostly use traditional healers must know the kind of questions to answer regarding the use of alternative medicine.
Last but not least is the culturally competent practice where nurses are expected to apply cross-cultural understanding and skills that are sensitive of culture when executing culturally-fitting nursing care. The Expert Panel on Global Nursing and Health (2010) writes that cross-cultural practice entails a multifaceted mix of facts of various cultural practices. It demands reflection on individual awareness of one's cultural worldview, feelings concerning differences in culture, and competence in cross-cultural evaluation and interactions. ...
