In brief, reflection involves the conscious thinking about something with the aim of gaining a better understanding.
Look Back
Looking back on my visit to the foot clinic near Niagara College, it was like going to meet a total stranger. Before this visit, I never knew there are foot clinics around that cater solely for persons diagnosed with diabetes. Accordingly, I did not have any mental images or preconceived notions of what to expect since this was my first time to visit a clinic of this nature. Similarly, I didn't know that such clinics are operated on a non-profit basis. What I can say therefore, is that I was curious to find out what such clinics looked like and how they operated.
Elaborate
I can describe myself in two words to capture my level of knowledge regarding foot clinics; totally green. Upon my arrival, a receptionist explained to me how the clinic operated. She explained to me that the clinic was a community non-profit facility that served diabetic patients. I also got to learn the responsibilities of the nurse in providing care to patients.
When the first patient arrived, I sat in the room and observed as the nurse received him and guided him through a short interview to get the relevant information. I observed that the nurse was polite and addressed the client in a gentle manner. All the time, the nurse typed the information supplied by the client into a computer. After the interview, the nurse examined the patient's foot and then proceeded to administer treatment. Meanwhile, she chatted with the client and explained to him how to take care of his feet at home. When another client came and the nurse noticed that he was not wearing socks, she explained why it was hygienic and important to always wear his shoes with socks.
