The study aimed to investigate the relationship between red meat, poultry, and fish consumption with diabetes in a Chinese population. The study involved 512000 individuals from both rural and urban areas. 52% of the sample were women with a mean age of 51 years. A laptop-based questionnaire was used to collect data where people were asked about their consumption of red meat, fish, poultry, and other meals. 461036 participants did not have diabetes. However, after 9 years of follow-up, 14931 of these population had diabetes. 47.0%, 1.3%, and 8.9% of participants consumed red meat, poultry, and fish, respectively. The consumption of red meat had 11%, and fish had 6% higher chances of getting diabetes. The study did not show any relationship between the occurrence of diabetes and the consumption of poultry. The study concluded that red meat and fish consumption were directly associated with diabetes occurrence. This was a common case among those participants from the urban areas. The strength of the study is that it uses a large sample size which makes it easy to exclude undiagnosed and diagnosed diabetes. The weakness of the study is that information was collected from hospital records and non-hospitalized cases of diabetes might have been missed.

However, it is unclear as to whether the consumption of eggs has a relationship with the occurrence of type 2 diabetes. The study aimed at differentiating the associations between egg and meat consumption and the occurrence of type 2 diabetes. The study involved 55851 participants. The relationship between eggs and meat consumption and type 2 diabetes was determined using the multivariate-adjusted logistic regression. The study concluded that meat intake is highly associated with the occurrence of type 2 diabetes, while eggs were not associated with its occurrence. The strength of the study is that the participants provide demographic, dietary, and anthropometric data at the baseline. This information might play a role in determining whether meat and egg consumption is associated with the occurrence of type 2 diabetes. The weakness of the study is the low response rate to the follow-up hospitalization questionnaires. This limitation might have led to the underestimation of type 2 diabetes cases.
