In the treatment of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) sustained virologic response is believed to be differing among ethnicities due to the differences in genetic traits. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of peginterferon and ribavirin and the association between IL28B genotypes and the treatment of efficacy. It was a retrospective cohort study that used data from medical records. 85 patients were deemed eligible to be assessed for antiviral therapy, 47 patients were available for IL28B genetic study where the Multiplex tetra-primer PCR method was used for rs12979860.
Quantitative Design
The research used 103 patients who had been diagnosed and treated for chronic hepatitis C (CHC) at Gachon University Gil Hospital between July 2004 and December 2009. 85 of the patients were assessed for antiviral therapy using peginterferon alfa-2a and ribavirin. Patients who were over or at age 18 with detections of anti-HCV and HCV RNA within the serum criteria was used to choose them for assessment. The subjects of suspected hepatocellular carcinoma, hypersensitivity towards drugs, personal history of chronic drinking and drug overdose, serious psychological disease and many others related to chronic diseases were excluded.
