Qualitative Studies on Prevalence and Impact of Nurse Burnout
Background of Studies In Article 1 (Eder & Meyer, 2022), the authors focus on understanding the psychological mechanisms that lead to the development of burnout among nurses in long-term care. The research article consists of two qualitative studies, each coupled with thematic analysis. The critical problem to be addressed is developing a more specific understanding of these psychological mechanisms, which forms the basis for potentially improved or newer intervention strategies. According to the authors, "nurses are highly stressed and thus, show high burnout rates compared to demographic changes exacerbating the problem" (Eder & Meyer, 2022). The premise is consistent with the recent declaration by the WHO that burnout is an occupation phenomenon with an impact on the wellbeing and performance of employees (WHO, 2019). Thus, the purpose of the study was to focus on the psychological dimensions, often overlooked by recent studies, that shape the development of burnout. Thus, the research question is what psychological factors influence work burnout among nurses working in long-term care? The study is significant to nursing because it provides knowledge that can be used to prevent or mitigate burnout increasing nurse performance, and job satisfaction. In article 2 (Friganović, Kurtović, & Selič, 2020), the authors conducted a cross-sectional multicenter qualitative study exploring the attitudes and burnout knowledge among intensive care nurses with burnout. Authors premised that while ICU nurses are exposed to prolonged stress, burnout prevention policies are yet to be established (Friganović, Kurtović, & Selič, 2020). Thus, there is a need for the development of knowledge that encompasses the currently-held attitudes by nurses and how they make sense of the issue of burnout in their professional experience. Thus, the purpose of the study was to determine the attitudes and 'sense; of knowledge of burnout among nurses with burnout. Following the recent classification of occupation burnout as an essential point of focus by the WHO, the article is relevant to the current topic because it expands and informs on the issue. How do these two articles support the nurse practice issue you chose? Article 1 provides information on the psychological mechanisms that underpin burnout. It deviates from other research outcomes that have primarily focused on non-psychological dimensions of burnout, such as long working hours, lack of sleep, and power to make decisions. Thus, the article contributes to the current topic because it provides a dimension that would otherwise be missed. After all, research has not focused on it extensively. For instance, Eder and Meyer (2022) argue that little is known about the specific psychological mechanism behind the resources crucial for improving nurses' mental health. This is vital because mental health is a core component of burnout. However, the study does not distinguish between control and intervention groups consistent with the current study in which participants are not group...
