Questions
Assignment: Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim
Healthcare organizations continually seek to optimize healthcare performance. For years, this approach was a three-pronged one known as the Triple Aim, with efforts focused on improved population health, enhanced patient experience, and lower healthcare costs.
More recently, this approach has evolved to a Quadruple Aim by including a focus on improving the work life of healthcare providers. Each of these measures are impacted by decisions made at the organizational level, and organizations have increasingly turned to EBP to inform and justify these decisions.
To Prepare:
Read the articles by Sikka, Morath, & Leape (2015); Crabtree, Brennan, Davis, & Coyle (2016); and Kim et al. (2016) provided in the Resources.
Reflect on how EBP might impact (or not impact) the Quadruple Aim in healthcare.
Consider the impact that EBP may have on factors impacting these quadruple aim elements, such as preventable medical errors or healthcare delivery.
To Complete:
Write a brief analysis (no longer than 2 pages) of the connection between EBP and the Quadruple Aim.
Your analysis should address how EBP might (or might not) help reach the Quadruple Aim, including each of the four measures of:
Patient experience
Population health
Costs
Work life of healthcare providers
How EBP Might Impact (Or Not Impact) the “Quadruple Aim” in Healthcare
Name
Institutional Affiliation
How EBP Might Impact (Or Not Impact) the “Quadruple Aim” In Healthcare
The three overarching goals that Donald Berwick and colleagues defined in 2008 in the “Triple Aim” framework fail to acknowledge the contributions of the workforce in the healthcare system. Sikka, Morath, and Leape (2015) propose the extension of the 2008 model to appreciate the significance of physicians, nurses, and other care workers in finding meaning and joy in their service. Besides enhancing the patient experience, refining population health, and decreasing healthcare cost, the “Quadruple Aim” adds a fourth goal of improving the work life of healthcare workers (Sikka, Morath, & Leape, 2015). The work life of care workers is also enhanced through evidence-based practice (EBP). According to Kim et al (2016), EBP might have an impact on the “Quadruple Aim” in healthcare, which improves group cohesion and job satisfaction among nurses.
Job satisfaction, which is the fourth goal introduced by Sikka, Morath, and Leape (2015) is reinforced by EBP beliefs and implementation. However, a study conducted by Kim et al found no significant correlation between EBP implementation and group attractiveness and cohesion. Nevertheless, the study that utilized the model of Advancing Research and Clinical Practice through Close Collaboration (ARCC) points that EBP beliefs among participants in a fellowship program are a primary predictor of job satisfaction and EBP implementation (Kim et al, 2016). Kim et al (2016) note that while EBP adoption and implementation are critical in ensuring the quality of care and improved patient outcomes, and a gold-standard in nursing care, nursing workload, poor knowledge and skills in EBP, and lack of organizational support have stifled EBP implementation efforts.
Various nurse leaders drawn from different hospitals and academia in California formed the regional and collaborative fellowship program at EBP Institute in 2006 with an aim of promoting EBP implemen...
