How will you contribute to the mission of the NURSE Corps Scholarship Program in providing care to underserved communities?
The NURSE Corps scholarship program enables students accepted or enrolled in a diploma, associate, baccalaureate, or graduate nursing programs to obtain financial support for tuition, fees and other educational expenses in exchange for working at an eligible NURSE Corps site upon graduation. This program also comes with other benefits such as books, medical equipment, and uniforms. This program of the U.S. government helps to ease the issue of shortage of nurses being experienced currently by health care facilities that are situated in Health Professional Shortage Areas. After graduation, the student under this program works for at least two years at these facilities. Administering health care to the underserved community requires one to have special skills to provide better services to them.
Providing care to the underserved community requires a lot of dedication and goodwill from the person involved. Personally there are various skills that I have that could help to better the services that are rendered to this population. First, I will dedicate myself to the delivery of compassionate and competent health care which is vital to this population. Among the skills I will render is the aptitude to listen to and converse with patients of diverse cultures or who speak other languages without discrimination, to express respect towards all patients, and to help them conquer the obstacles of the health care system. I have the ability to recognize patient’s unexpressed needs since I studied psychology as a unit in college. Since I am a good listener and a good communicator, I will relate well with these patients and through the rapport I will be able to gain access to the information they would have not told other nurses.
