A3: Professional Role Socialization Paper
The Associate Degree in Nursing program at Excelsior College is designed for individuals with significant clinical health care experience. This means that all students have provided some aspect of health care for patients. Transitioning to the role of the Professional Nurse requires development of a new framework in your approach to patient care. The process of role transition requires you to reflect on what knowledge and skills you bring as a student and how you transform into the role of the professional nurse. While not all students in the program are licensed practical nurses similarities exist in the evolution of your current position to a new role.
Using APA format, write a six (6) to ten (10) page paper (excludes cover and reference page). A minimum of three (3) current professional references must be provided. Current references include professional publications or valid and current websites dated within five (5) years. Additionally, a textbook that is no more than one (1) edition older than current textbook may be used.
Read the following and then compose your paper:

The paper consists of five (5) parts and must be submitted by the close of week six.
Part I: Define professional socialization. Using the criteria for a profession described in the assigned readings, discuss three (3) criteria of the nursing profession which support professional socialization.
Part II: Refer to the Four Stages of Role Transition listed at the end of the Module Notes for this module. Read and summarize each stage. Then, identify the one stage which you are currently experiencing and support your decision.
Part III: Identify two barriers which may interfere with accomplishing Claywell’s FOURTH stage of role transition. For each barrier, describe two (2) resources to overcome each one. (total of 4 resources).
Part IV: Claywell (2009) discusses 8 areas of differences between the LPN and RN roles: Assessment skills, Patient teaching skills; Communication skills; Educational preparation; Intravenous Therapy; Legal responsibilities; Nursing care planning; Thinking skills. Choose three (3) differences and provide supporting evidence how the differences you selected are implemented AND why they are such an integral part of the RN role.
Part V: Conclusion. Describe your plan for socialization into the role of the professional nurse.

In nursing care, professional nurses are required to develop a new framework towards patient care during the transition process to benefit them in their field of profession. Accordingly, professional socialization presents a suitable platform for the transition process. This essay defines professional socialization looking at four stages of the transition. It also analyzes the eight areas of differences between licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and registered nurses (RNs), and further suggesting a probable plan for socialization, to professional nurses.
Professional Socialization
Professional socialization in nursing is a process by which one’s attitudes, values and general characteristics form part of his profession. The process includes formal and informal learning processes. These are two important facet of learning because, in most professions, an informal process like observation, trial and error, and mentoring comprises of eighty percent of the knowledge acquired (Claywell, 2009). On the other hand, learning from formal processes like workshops, classes and other forms of studies, an individual gains twenty percent of the knowledge needed.
The transition process to nursing practicing requires both formal and informal learning processes. Students practicing nursing need to be prepared to overcoming several obstacles that they might face during the transition in order to become a professional nurse. The transition process can be less challenging when a student acquires knowledge both formally and informally. The process is a crucial stage for nurses because it empowers students to be more effective and ensuring safety to patients. This requires one to include formal socialization through educational experiences. Certain activities that might need to be done in this process of professional socialization include physical assessment developing patient care plans and patient teaching plans. Other informal processes include observation or working with other professional nurses in other areas to be familiarized with the happenings (Claywell, 2009).
When transiting to professional nursing, there are four stages of transition that students undergo. These stages include the initial process of doing the first stage of the nursing professional practice, which is usually marked by intensive and fluctuation of emotions. Graduates go through discovery, learning, adjusting, performing and accommodating each other. During the time of the transition, junior nurses have similar workload as other senior nurses. The first stage of the transition is considered difficult being that it is the first time a student nurse is being exposed to the real world of professional nursing (Claywell, 2009). The second stage of nurse transition includes entails progressing to professional nursing, meaning that the experiences during this period include advanced thinking necessary for a professional nursing career. In this stage, knowledge level increases and skill competency are enhanced. Students gain skills through practical experiences.
