Professional organizations and association have become an important aspect of the nursing profession. The entities are a source of energy, ideologies, and proactive work that promotes professionalism and advocates for the needs of their members and clients (Mathews, 2012). The organizations have a significant impact on the ethical and legal structures employed in the country. In line with this, the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) has often offered support to government legislations that are meant to reform health care, enhance cost-effective services, provide high-quality care, and shifting the healthcare system towards a focus on primary and preventive care (American Academy of Nursing, 2010)
The American Nursing Academy serves the nurses and the people by advancing health policies and practice. The Academy engages in the generation, synthesis, and dissemination of practice knowledge through the development and execution of evidence-based and policy-related initiatives concerning the health system (American Academy of Nursing, 2016). The American Nurses Association (ANA) is the corporate member of the AAN. The ANA has actively participated in the implementation of strategies that guarantee quality affordable health care. In line with this, on 6/25/2015 the ANA supported the Supreme Court ruling on maintaining the Affordable Care Act Tax Credit Subsidies (Rosenbaum, 2011; The American Nurse, 2012)). The move enabled over ten million citizens to access medical insurance cover. The ANA advocated for the expansion of Medicaid to ensure more Americans get the deserved care.
