For this interview, I interviewed the director of nursing.
What is your role as a health care team member?
As a director of nursing, my role is cultivating nurse empowerment; an initiative that enhances healthcare in our country. As a leader, I believe empowerment of nurses increases their capability of taking appropriate action, engage in decision making and be accountable for their actions; henceforth, enhancing both staff and patients outcome. Empowering nurses can also alleviate absenteeism in nurses; thus, improving our health standards. Besides, we as leaders ensure the health sector is moving towards the nation’s health goal. Thus, under these circumstances we leaders we lead by example in facilitating commitment towards serving the community. We are also required to train and manage nursing staffs as well as maintenance of care throughout the entire facility. Some of our core roles include leading the nursing team in delivering excellent care, ensuring that each member of the nursing staff is competent, work with others to develop and implement new policies and strategies where necessary and ensuring all patients are given appropriate care at the right time.
How do you define professionalism and how does professional responsibility influence your work?
I take professionalism as conforming to the nursing standards of care and nursing ethics. Thus, professionalism can be defined as adhering to nursing standards and ethics as well as the standards of a work environment. Health professionals practice care with integrity, consideration, competency and empathy. Teamwork is also encouraged because no one can succeed without involving others. As the director of nursing I have a responsibility to my co-workers, patients and my family; therefore, professionalism includes how I will coordinate or tackle these duties. Thus, to me, professionals are individuals who can demonstrate responsibility, adaptability, good teamwork and positive attitudes and behaviors. Professional nurses have to possess good communication skills. Last but not least, professional responsibility influences our work in many ways. For instance, it enhances the ability of set goals and objectives and develops a plan for achieving these aims. These make the distribution of resources easy and ensure minimal time is wasted.
Do you consider yourself a steward of health care? Why or Why not?
Yes, I am a health care steward; besides, all nurses should be stewards. First and foremost, a steward is one who organizes a team, oversees the team and takes care of team members or anything that arises as the team is trying to achieve its goals. These can be seen in the manner in which I coordinate the team. For instance, I have put all measures to ensure good teamwork. Besides that, I facilitate nurse empowerment, a strategy that enhances nurses’ capability of taking appropriate action, engaging in decision making and being accountable for their actions; henceforth, improving both staff and patients outcome.
