The nursing career is a known to be a caring profession and encompasses the connection and empathy for patients. Caring can be demonstrated by the ability of the nurse by the manner in which they embody the five major values of professional nursing. These values include integrity, human dignity, altruism, social justice, and autonomy (Fahrewald et al 2005). A caring nurse will embody all the five values in their clinical practice and the strategies to integrate and teach these core values are outlined and the results of these value-based nursing education are well documented. These integrated values education guarantees that the caring behavior legacy is embodied by nursing professionals and strengthens the future workforce in the nursing career. In this time of increasing ethical quandaries it is important that nurses fully internalize their professional values in order to establish and maintain their unique professional identity (Schmidt & McArthur 2017). The problem to this approach has been that nursing researchers and organizations have always offered different approaches and conceptions regarding professional nursing values and this has resulted in a lack of clarity pertaining the attributes and clarity of this construct.
My personal values such as integrity and moral accountability are largely grounded in nurse-patient relationship and the ethics of patient caring. As Florence Nightingale envisioned, nursing is a special art and science that blends exquisite skills, humanistic, and a caring presence coupled with evidence-based knowledge (LaSala, 2009). According to LaSala (2009) being morally responsible and accountable as a nurse is essential for a nursing role as an ethical patron. Nurses who perform their roles with integrity often possess a solid sense of themselves and will act in manners consistent with what they know is the correct thing to do. As a nurse, I am aware of the ideal of beneficence, which means that I should not do any harm to any patient and must be honest, kind, and ethical (Dworkowitz 2013). These are the values that I have held to offer the best quality of patient care so that I understand that I am practicing with integrity.
Professional boundaries as they relate to nursing care refer to limits that secure he pace between the client’s vulnerability and the authority of the profession.
