There are instances in a conversation when silence occurs. In some cases, it can enhance the productivity of the process for example, silence in a meeting produces excellent results. In the field of medicine, silence is recommended when observing a patient. It helps avoid divided attention which in some cases result in malpractice. To a patient, who seems confused and anxious, silence helps settle their thoughts on the medical operation they are undergoing. In other cases, silence in a conversation can be termed as awkward. It usually makes people uncomfortable.
I remember a conversation I once had with my therapist. It is still in my mind up to now even though it occurred five years ago. In the process of the conversation during the diagnosis, the therapist went silent abruptly. I waited for a few seconds thinking they will break the silence, but oh no, the seconds amounted to minutes. I tried to break the silence, but she still kept quiet. I had to keep quiet too. The feeling I had was woeful. Anxiety overtook my systems and I felt pressured to talk. Even though I was not sure of what to say, I did. The therapist not responding for the second time made it worse. It was clear that I was uncomfortable. For a moment I felt like storming out of that office, but a thought came into my mind telling me to wait a little longer. What was she up to? I thought. I felt rejected.
