Decision-making in a hospital setting is critical for all medical practitioners, and it is the basis on which such facilities operate. It is essential to determine which patients require urgent help and prioritize their treatment. Each disease or symptom may have single or multiple complications that may put the lives of patients at risk. Based on the codes of ethics in practice, such instances should not happen while the medical practitioners are in the vicinity. There is no particular format for decision making in such scenarios, and all decisions are based on the knowledge and experience that the nurse has concerning different maladies and how they affect the patient (Johannessen, 2017). It is important to also consider the fact that these decisions affect the reputation of an entire department and the facility because, in case of severe life-threatening complications, the affected may file suits and demand compensations. They are usually costly, and when personnel are implicated, they may lose their practice license. If a decision is hard to make individually, medical practitioners are encouraged to approach their peers and seek guidance (Suhonen et al., 2018). This tactic is used to avert or spread risk.
In this scenario, the nurse has four patients with different complications and medical demands, and her role is to determine the ones to prioritize.
