Smalltown, USA – The weatherman predicts a heavy storm likely to escalate to hurricanes that is due to befall the coastal region as of 28th August. Smalltown, being a coastal town will certainly be affected by the storm. Herewith, the mitigation measure needed to avert the impending damages and possibly casualties that may arise due to the storm is proposed together with the evacuation plans and recovery advisories.
It is important to understand what storms and hurricanes are and the potential harm that can cause to both property and human lives. Storm simply refers to any form of intrusion that interrupts the normal behavior of the atmosphere at a very high magnitude (MSFC, 2017). Thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes are the obvious storms suspects. Hurricanes are storms of higher magnitudes which form as tropical winds pass over ocean waters with temperatures that are relatively high and starts swirling up to a speed of about 74mph and sometimes forming storm surges which are pushed towards the land (MSFC, 2017). The storm surges carry large volumes of water and have the potential of causing floods and even destroying buildings. Depending on the speed of the wind, hurricanes can be classified into five distinct categories(category 1, 2,3,4,5) using the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, and the extend of destruction varies accordingly with category 5 being the most disastrous (MSFC, 2017). Scientists have also been able to establish the different parts that make up a hurricane: the eye, eye wall, and rain bands (MSFC, 2017). Hurricanes are usually accompanied by tornadoes and can last for as long as few days up to several months depending on the strength of the winds. The dangers posed by hurricanes are catastrophic and mitigation measures are vital. Luckily, the weather forecasts can predict the emergence of these disastrous storms and thus lack of preparedness is not an excuse.
Preparedness
 The anticipated hurricanes will undoubtedly be accompanied by negative impacts to not only the people living in the coastal region but also those residing in the mainland. It is therefore important to take the necessary measures in readiness for the storm. First and foremost, it is advisable that everyone stays informed and has relevant information concerning the storm from trusted sources. Every person should watch out for misleading information from sources that are not genuine. Most importantly, the difference between hurricane watches and hurricane warnings should be established. Hurricanes warnings should be the last form of warning signifying the last touches of the readiness process (CDC, n.d.). Radios and televisions are the most appropriate sources of information and power backups are recommended just in case of power outages caused by the storms. Additional information can be obtained from genuine digital platforms such as the FEMA App (Ready.gov, 2020).
