Group psychotherapy is a fundamental approach to resolving problems, modifying behaviors, and initiate positive changes in the lives of group members. Markin & Kasten (2014) defined group psychotherapy as an approach where at least one therapist provides treatment to multiple clients in the form of a group. Group therapy does not often operate in isolation; in many instances, other types of therapeutic approaches, which include medication and individual psychotherapy, are integrated.
Successful group therapy is guided by principles. In Yalom’s classic text, The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy (Markin & Kasten, 2014), 12 fundamental principles provide a blueprint to productive group therapy. They include universality, altruism, installation of hope, imparting information, a corrective recapitulation of the primary family, development of socializing techniques, Imitative behavior, cohesion, existential factors, catharsis, interpersonal learning and self-understanding (Markin & Kasten,2014). These principles are often deployed in group psychotherapy.
My group therapy is made up of adolescents who abuse marijuana. The members have a history of marijuana use, and some of them have become addicted. They reported complaints that are associated with reduced cognitive abilities such as impaired memory drop in school work performance as well as poor coping with daily activities of living, such as depressed focus and behavioral disorders.
Group psychotherapy is one of the appropriate approaches to managing marijuana abuse. Sylvia (2014) reported that group therapy is efficacious amongst adolescents who are marijuana users. Sylvia points out that the effectiveness of group therapy is enhanced when the group is composed of members who have low to high levels of conduct disorder and who demonstrate mild, moderate, and severe problems within the confines of the same group.
