According to Laschinger, Purdy & Almost (2007), leadership is defined as the ability of the managers of an organization to persuade others to perform their duties as required. It is important to note that it is quite hard to place value on any leadership or any other qualitative aspects of a company, as compared to the quantitative metrics. As was once stated by the leadership expert Warren Bennis that a leader should be able to translate the vision of people in the organization into reality. Therefore, in every organization, there is a leader that is in charge of the affairs in that organization. Even among nurses there are leaders or managers and these leaders have got their various activities (Bolden & Gosling,2006).
This essay examines the thoughts and observations on activities as a nurse manager or leader.
A Nurse Manager or Leader
The current nurse leaders are performing their duties in a quite complex situation. Due to these complexities that are there in the nursing leadership they lead to value conflicts and also creates some potentiality of a moral distress. Moral distress normally comes up when one is well aware of what should be done morally and ethically, and cannot do it due to the organizational constraints. As nurse leaders, there are several activities that are required to be performed. They also have their own views and observations concerning the activities that they are required to do. As nurse leaders, they are of the view that their number one role is to create cultures that can support the actions of courage in nurses. According to American Nursing Association, leaders are supposed to create a healthy working environment that would make nurses who are their members to be courageous when performing their activities as they are expected to. The Association has come up with nine elements that should be observed by the nurse leaders. Out of those nine elements, the one that has been emphasized on is the fifth principle. That principle five states that leaders should be competent, credible, expert and visible. These characteristics or behaviors are supposed to be seen in nursing leaders for them to be able to show moral courage. The other activity that nurse leaders are expected to carry out in their line of duty is to ensure that there are no conflicts among employees; either between themselves or between themselves and/ or even the patients that are under their watch.
