The mean, median and mode are measures of central tendency in a population that attempts to describe data collected by identifying the central point. However, there are certain population characteristics that make each of these tools most appropriate when determining the central location in a population.
The mean is most appropriate when the population data collected is discrete, continuous and the data is normally distributed.
