Pneumonia care and the nursing home
This article was authored by Soo Carusone, Mark Loeb, and Lynne Lohfeld (2006) and published in the BMC Geriatrics Journal. The article was chosen as an example of a qualitative research design. The model summary used for this paper is presented in the text book as one where data is collected through observation and interviews. The research article also being summarized does not involve a sample population but instead the researcher involves every patient with pneumonia.
Problem Statement
Nursing home residents are often taken to hospitals for diagnostic tests or to get critical care services. These transfers are both expensive and for some, linked with heightened risks. Although enhanced technology offers long-term care facilities to convey more intricate health care on location, if this is to become the norm, then residents and family members have to perceive the value of such care.
Statement of Purpose
The quantitative study looks at resident and family member perspectives on in situ care for pneumonia.
Hypothesis
Pneumonia and other lower respiratory infections are a major cause of death among nursing home residents. Residents with pneumonia at low-to-medium death risk may be managed safely in a long-term care facility.
Study Methods
The study uses a multi-centered random controlled clinical trial that examines the effectiveness and usefulness of using a standard procedure for treating home-gotten pneumonia. 20 nursing homes in Southern Ontario were harmonized by size and one member in each category was randomly assigned to utilize the clinical pathway.
Key Findings
