Background
The nursing shortage is one of the major problems around the world in the field of nursing. Over the years, it has been noted that nurses play an important role in the field of medicine as they care for the patients in the hospital. Due to inadequate staffing, it has been noted that hospitals will not be able to provide safe and quality care to their patients. The reason behind the argument is that most of the nursing activities are quite demanding, which easily cause one to burn out. In this paper, the author is providing a PICOT statement on the shortage of staff faced, especially by the neonatal intensive care unit.
Problem Statement
The nursing shortage is a situation where the demand for nursing professionals surpasses the available supply. The demand within a health facility can exist at the local, national and global level. The nursing shortage can be measured when the number of job openings available surpasses the jobs that are available. The nursing shortage is a major problem in developing nations. There are some causes of nursing shortage apart from inadequately trained nurses they include increased rates of admission into nursing school and also when the newly trained nurses are not properly placed.
Purpose of the change proposal
Nurses need much time with their patients in order to deliver quality work, but due to the shortage of nurses, it is difficult for this to occur. Thus, this is overworking the nurses and also this ensures that nurses do not attend well to their patients as they have to divide their short time to each patient and this makes very tired at the end of the day. There is a need to solve this problem as it weighs heavily on nurses and also on patients as they end up not having the service they require from the nurses.
PICOT
Population (P)
The populations in this project were the patients from neonatal intensive care unit. Using patients from neonatal intensive care unit was a good choice because one can see how the nursing shortage can affect not only the nursing care, but also be a cause for HAI’s (Hospital-acquired infections). Cox, Wills & Coustasse (2014) state that hospitals with staffing problems often give patients poor services mostly due to overworking and working burnout. The nurses and patients from this area were chosen for research as one could rely on their information.
Intervention (I)
The intervention part is significant as it explains how the researchers played a role in handling this group of populations. The parents of neonates in neonatal intensive care units participated without being frightened. The parents of neonates were involved in this study. During this study privacy of the patients and their information’s was maintained as the families did not want their names to be disclosed. It was agreed that creating awareness about this issue and also encouraging the parents not to be afraid of exposing their names would help them not to be afraid of exposure shortly.
Comparison (C)
The next part of the research was a comparison. The author compiled the data and compared the information given for the study. The information was compared by combining the electronic records a...
