In Kansas, nurse practitioners can provide care independently as long as it is under the nursing aspect, but there is a requirement of providing medical aspects of care that is under the authorization for collaborative practice with another physician. The collaborative practice, which is developed between physician and nurse practitioners, is reviewed annually. Although nurse practitioners are recognized as the primary caregiver in Kansas, they are not fully independent. That is Kansas allows nurse practitioners to prescribe controlled substances, but it should be as per the detailed medical care of the collaborative physician. An experienced or trained nurse practitioner in Kansas does receiver waiver to dispense product with buprenorphine, but there has to be a supervising physician that is certified or who has authority to treat patients with the opioid disorder.
