Pharmacological Management for the Primary Care Pediatric Patient
The most challenging section in patient-care is handling children. Prescribing medicine to children is always a challenging task. My experience in a pediatric clinical rotation in prescribing medicine gave me important lessons that can greatly benefit my career. I encountered a three-year-old child who had diarrhea and was vomiting, a case that gave me many challenges.
Misdiagnosis can happen easily in children because they cannot express adequately what is amiss in their bodies. The child was vomiting continuously without any breaks. He was crying unceasingly and his mouth was dry. Romero et al. (2017) argued that diarrhea remains the most significant cause of death in children of less than five years. This calls for carefulness in administering the right medicine and the right dosage to patients. I prescribed oral rehydration alongside Pepto-Bismol but the patient did not recover. This gave me an awful feeling because my supervisor scolded me, saying that I was incompetent.
