Summary of the Article
“Health-related quality of life of African-American female breast cancer survivors, survivors of other cancers, and those without cancer” by Claridy, Ansa, Damus, Alema-Mensah, & Smith, is an article that tries to make a contrast in the health-related quality of life between African American women who have no history of breast cancer and the African-American women who have survived from cancer. Today, survivors of breast cancer are the largest group globally. According to the article, these survivors have continued to increase because of cancer treatment and diagnostic treatment (Claridy, Ansa, Damus, Alema-Mensah, & Smith, 2018). The authors assert that there are substantial existence disparities that exist by ethnicity and race. For example, African American women have the lowermost rate of breast cancer cases in America. However, they have a high death rate that is approximately 41% higher than that of white females.
The authors also state that there are disparities between diseases like thyroid cancer, throat cancer, and cervical cancer. Generally, African-American females have a high death rate and short existence paralleled to other ethnic groups. In the article, few samples of few minority women were taken from women who have no histories of cancer and those who have survived cancer. This suggests that there are racial differences in breast cancer survivors HRQoL. The research not only linked the HRQoL of white women and African American women, but it also compared the HRQol of women from the same ethnicity who did not have a history of breast cancer.
Study methods, Data Analysis, and Results
The data that was used in this research was acquired from the 2010 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). This is a yearly survey that is used to observe the health of the people of the United States on a variety of health topics. The data assortment of NHIS uses multistage selection to get a demonstrative sample of residents. Further data from Women's Health Initiative-Observations used. Women who were thirty-five years and above were used in the study. The study used 1702 African women who were 35 years and above. The study also used multivariate regression analysis to approximate the differences in the HRQol of these women. Mental and physical health items PROMIS (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System) scale was used to evaluate the variances in HRQol. The status of cancer was defined using two self-reported history questions of disease.
