Pay for performance is an electronic procedure that is used in storing health-related data for persons. In this case, the data can easily be gathered, created, consulted, and managed by medical personnel on authorized grounds within a healthcare organization. This has been deemed as one that can offer increased benefits to staff members and ultimately to the entire organization. Pay for performance approach enhances an efficient workflow for improved safety and care (HealthIT.gov, 2013). Electronic Medical Records (EMR) model is receiving significant popularity within the United States, United Kingdom, and other developed countries due to the many benefits that it comes with. The current paper seeks to look deeply into the aspect of pay for performance in attempts to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of EMR especially in the healthcare sector.
Adoption of “Meaningful Use” stimulates the application of EMR in several significant ways. Electronic medical record systems form a central area for varied applications that grant benefits to sick people and medical personnel. Most importantly, the electronic approach of data storage is vital and has cost-saving potentialities (Jha, Joynt, Orav & Epstein, 2012). An EMR that is easily understood entails medical related capabilities, support systems for doctors to make decisions, and enhance information aggregation. Moreover, progress has been attached to heightened efficiency, improved accuracy of medical records, prevention of duplicate procedures and improved pharmacy inventory management (Guest Contributor, 2013). Clinical decision support systems can provide reference information for doctors and automatic alerts may warn them about recording improper figures that are meant to facilitate prescriptions that may produce adverse effects on a patient. There are several benefits of the EMR model that have played a fundamental role in enhancing the adoption of the model.
Data quality and legibility emerges where that in EMR is accurate as compared to the one from paper records. First, the whole information may reveal accuracy in case an individual’s observation is recorded by clinicians and is not occupied during aggregation. That way, doctors are most likely to notice a mistake because they are familiar with the information. Secondly, these systems have the capability to produce signals in case the data recorded does not match the expected range.Thirdly, information in these systems is more legible as compared to the handwritten one (Guest Contributor, 2013).
Furthermore, medical errors are reduced since EMR systems can respond to the recorded data with signals. These signals may be related to allergic reactions to drugs or inappropriate dosages made for treatment for a given condition, or suggested preventive care, such as a vaccine. EMR fosters improved efficiency since it makes patient information available to multiple doctors, and prevents the loss of lab or imaging results (HealthIT.gov, 2013).
