The ovaries are an integral part of the female reproductive system, and they are adjacent to either side of the uterus. Besides the ova, the ovary produces two hormones: estrogen and progesterone. More often than not, women will develop a fluid-filled sac on the ovary called a cyst. Cysts are hard to detect, as they are symptomless and painless. In most cases, ovarian cysts are innocuous and will vanish even without medical treatment. The cysts cause little, if any, symptoms. However, in scarce cases, cysts turn out to be cancerous. In extreme cases, there may be ovarian torsion where large cysts will twist the ovary causing a shift in position. Such a situation can be fatal to the victim and surgery becomes imperative.
During my practicum experience, a patient during ultrasound tests revealed symptoms like morning nausea, change in menstrual cycle, breast tenderness, and painful sexual intercourse, which according to my experience and research were those of an ovarian cyst. To detect ovarian cysts we performed a pelvic examination, and I was on the lookout for swellings in the ovaries of the patient. Later I noticed that one of her ovaries was swollen and consequently, I ordered an ultrasound test to ascertain the presence of a cyst. Ultrasound technology will help determine factors like size, location, orientation, and contents of the cysts, i.e., solid, liquid composure (Stöppler, 2016). Since most cysts will disappear within a month, the health care provider may not recommend a treatment plan immediately he will instead carry out constant tests to fully establish that the patient has the condition.
