Organizational Values Organizational Values and Nursing Name Instructor's name Course details Date Introduction The following paper looks at effective communication as a problem solving aspect while promoting adept leadership and management styles. Effective communication is provided as a tool for ensuring quality health care services coupled with the protection of patients and the preservation of the values of the organization (Welchman& Griener, 2005). This aims to change the values and goals of the staff to achieve a collective purpose that is beneficial to the employing organization and the nursing profession. Effective communication techniques Most nursing roles are multifaceted and dynamic. Effective communication within the nursing department allows one on one supervisory relationship amongst the nursing students, for the clinic and the patients (Welchman& Griener, 2005). This opportunity allows practicing nurses, students and staff to apply theoretical experiences to practical situations, as they test their skills in a supportive and safe environment. These opportunities to mentor and coach have proved to model competent practitioners by encouraging practice-based learning allowing for improvement in patient outcomes through increased staff ability. Effective communication in nursing also gives nurses greater access to information. This leads to a reduction in potential for errors during and adds to the nurse’s confidence in honing her skills (Frankel, 2008). It also gives the nurse more time to interact directly with the patient which reduces the time spent on documentation and searching for documents copies. Practicum experience In my role as ward supervisor, effective communication aided my success at problem solving in the ward. My other strengths were being a good listener and being compassionate. This coupled with a good understanding of the patho-physiology behind some of the health problems helped to augment my nursing care and to provide health education to the patient and the patient’s relatives. The ANA standards of practice include assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, health education, coordination of care and consultation among others (ANA, 2006). This was very important in the standard evaluation I incorporated in my philosophy through the reviewing of nursing care plans. The hospital I worked in assisted nurses to meet standards by providing communication tools for nursing care plans and education. One of the most essential communication strategies at the ICU setting was cooperation which involved working with the family, patient and health care providers to provide a caring, humane environment (ANA, 2006b). A multidisciplinary approach was applied for the care of critically ill patients to ensure that all the patient’s needs...
