Introduction
Change management remains an essential element in the improvement in quality within the nursing process. The implementation of change first disrupts the status quo of an institution, moves everyone and everything into a new approach of carrying out functions and lastly ensuring that the currently adopted practice does not return back to the initial state. In the past our organization had in particular experienced challenges that needed change (Kelliher, & Parry, 2015).
It was identified that the patient’s personal information and details including the planned visit dates were in handwritten in folders. Cross checking all this information in allocation of work was determined to be time consuming and complicated, a factor that resulted in errors. The purpose of this paper is to study a recent change that occurred within our health facility and how effective the process was handled.
Analysis of the Change and its Effectiveness
Change within a work environment in most instances results in uncertainty and can result in emotional challenges for employees especially when the change is unexpected. It is empirical to ascertain that the needs of healthcare require nurses to constantly work in changing environments, a factor that requires their adaptation to different changes such as new technologies, government policies among other innovations (Brenk-Franz, Strauss, Tiesler, Fleischhauer, Ciechanowski, Schneider, & Gensichen, 2015). In as much as there is a need for commitment to the new approaches of working aimed at delivery of high-quality healthcare services, nurses have always felt that the change factor is imposed on them and the manner in which they view and carry out their functions. Within our medical institution, I noted through an audit on the time it took to organize the daily diaries that carried the visits and the plans allocated by nurses I their shifts during the course of a week and determined that the process was tedious and took well over 40 minutes each day. Cross checking all this information in the allocation of work was determined to be time-consuming and complicated, a factor that resulted in errors. Before making the changes, we undertook an initiative to determine how the nurses felt about these existing systems and discovered the need of a more effective caseload management approach that would be easy to use (Brenk-Franz, et.al).
As a team, we embarked on an initiative that would foresee the alternative approaches in planning the patient’s visits to ease the continuity of care. We, therefore, arrived at developing an electronic caseload Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that would help in managing the future visits of patients.
