Patient education comprises teachings given by healthcare professionals to patients to enable them better understand their conditions. The patients can receive the education in either health or non-health environments. For improved healthcare outcomes, patients need more time with their respective physicians who would interact with them. During the interaction, with enthusiasm, the physician motivates and responds to the patients’ needs and concerns (Paterick, Ptel, Tajik, & Chandrasekaram, 2017). The patient education has numerous benefits with the aim of improving individual health besides enhancing the performance of the entire health care industry.
An adult leukemia patient by the name Paul who had suffered from the disease for more than three decades visited a health facility in which he was interviewed. He admitted having received patient education on numerous occasions. As a result, the benefits he received from the initiative have contributed significantly to his abilities to live with and manage well the deadly condition.
When asked about the benefits he has witnessed from the patient education, Paul responded by giving a good number of them. First, he admitted that patient education had equipped him with the insights to understand his health condition as a leukemia patient. Through the education process, Paul admitted that the physician discussed with him the diagnosis of the disease and side effects of the condition. Also, Paul also came to understand possible treatment options as well as how to prevent his condition from deteriorating. As a result, Paul asserts that the level of his anxiety significantly reduced and trust between him and the caregiver developed (Paterick et al., 2017). Moreover, the understanding he got from the patient education enabled him to be in a better position to be making informed decisions concerning his healthcare.
