Introduction
The role of nursing in advancing the primary goal of a healthcare system is one that is cannot be undermined. Nursing remains at the very centre of a functional and effective healthcare system and hence the need to ensure that it remains in tandem with the dynamism in the sector. The IOM Future of Nursing Report was developed by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative. The aim of this report was to establish ways in which the nursing field can be enhanced thereby making it more effective and efficient. This paper has dissected through the report so as to establish how best the nursing field can be advanced.
Background Information
The sittings of the Robert Johnson Foundation Committee were prompted by the realization that nursing is one of the key pillars in any healthcare system. The healthcare system in America is seen as one of the most effective compared to other similar systems in other parts of the world. However, even with the immense achievements over the years, the system continues to face a myriad of challenges which adversely affect ability to deliver services. The complexity of the healthcare system requires that nurses should take up more role including leadership and management positions. In so doing, it will be possible to gradually meet the increasing needs within the system of healthcare in America.
The Report
Members of the nursing profession form the larger part of the entire workforce in the healthcare system. Being at the center of the system, nurses have the opportunity to execute the crucial role of ensuring that that the objectives of the Affordable Care Act are realized. However, nurses face a number of barriers that make it difficult for them to effectively respond and stay in tandem with the changes that take place within the system. The healthcare system has remained evolutionary and there is need to break all barriers to ensure that nurses remain properly positioned in order to spearhead advancement and crucial changes within the system.
It is on the backdrop of the prevailing circumstances that IOM and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation collaborated to launch an initiative aimed at responding to transformation and assessment of nursing as a profession (National Academy of Services, 2010). The initiative that was two years long intended to come up with a report which would give recommendation regarding the identified issues. Once the recommendations were actioned, they would contribute towards advancement of the nursing profession.
During the deliberations of the committee, four key issues were identified. One was that it is imperative for nurses to fully explore their training and education during their practice. The practice has been that although nurses undergo rigorous training when in nursing school, they only get to practice 50% of the knowledge gained (National Academy of Services, 2010). This is owing to the many challenges encountered during the actual practice.
