Many a time, it has been argued that experience is the best teacher. The experiences people have at different stages of their lives determine their future career choices. When I was growing, I was a strong supporter of athletic activities. At one point, I attended a rugby training session with my father. This experience changed my life and career aspirations. During the training, a young rugby player was severely injured. The situation transformed my perspective about nursing and its importance in healthcare. I understood that nursing is a profession that requires comprehensive knowledge about caregiving, cultural competency, and other core ethical issues.
The injured player, Amante, was 12 years and broke her collar bone while training. Shortly after the injury, nurses from a local health center were called to the scene to care for and handle the patient. I always told my father that I wanted to become a virologist to assist in vaccine development. However, the events of this fateful day changed my dreams and birthed a hunger to pursue a career in nursing. The attitudes and behaviors exhibited by the nurses revealed why nursing is an essential career in healthcare. Without the input of nurses, other specialists can't handle patients as needed.
