Professional nursing organizations and associations are essential components in enhancing services provided by nursing practitioners. The provision of high-quality services and care is determined by the nurses' abilities to stay in touch with trends that impact on the profession. Professional organizations play a significant role in promoting the welfare of the nurses as well as advocating for their needs. According to Koch et al. (2016), joining a professional organization provides workers/employees with a platform whereby they can perpetuate their competences. Over the years, professional organizations among nursing practitioners tend to act as tools that promote and encourage the use of evidence-based practices among nurses. Moreover, nursing professional associations provide members with opportunities to influence policies that affect nurses at both local and national levels. One of the nursing professional organizations is the American Nurses Association (ANA).
All nursing professional organizations including the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA), the national league for nursing (NLN), academy of medical-surgical nurses (AMSN), and the emergency nurses association (ENA), among many others, play significant roles in improving healthcare systems (Koch et al., 2016). On its part, the American Nurses Association (ANA) is comprised of more than four million members with most of them being registered nurses (RNs) from different parts across the U.S. Nurses can jin ANA through different platforms such as constituent nurses associations, affiliate organizations and partnership specialty (Koch et al., 2016). Notably, since the professional organization (ANA) was established in 1896, it has been on the forefront to advocate for the improvement of care and services among nursing professionals (Ballard et al., 2016). Over the last decades, ANA has remained as one of the platforms in which nurses have used to voice their opinions and concerns in relation to concepts related to their profession. According to Ballard et al. (2016), ANA's mission is “nurses advancing our profession to improve health for all." As a result, the organization seeks to ensure that nurses improve themselves to enhance the provision of healthcare services to all people. On the other hand, some of the main goals of the organization include: ensuring nurses work in a safe and healthy environment, enhancing and promoting high standards in the nursing profession, promoting the welfare of nursing professionals, and advocating for policies and issues that have impacts on nurses and their patients (Ballard et al., 2016).
