Introduction
Allergic rhinitis is a condition that is estimated to affect close to 60 million people in America. Better known as hay fever, this condition is mainly characterized by a runny nose, and an itchy feeling in the mouth and the skin around the nose. There are certain specific symptoms that are associated with this condition. In this paper, the main symptoms of this condition have been highlighted. Further, the paper has focused on some of the management steps both medical and environmental that can be taken to contain the condition.
Early Phase Response Triggers
There are various triggers of allergic rhinitis both outdoor and indoor. Outdoor triggers include pollen, ragweed, mold spores, grass and hay. Indoors, some of the triggers include mold, pet dander and dust mites. For most people with this condition, it runs in the family and is passed through genes from parents to offspring. Scientific researchers have shown that people suffering from this condition are likely to develop other forms of allergies including asthma (Grammer, 2012).
Signs and Symptoms
The most common symptoms that people with allergic rhinitis exhibit include, runny or stuffy nose often combined with congestion of the nasal pipe (Lieberman, 2011). In addition, the person experiences sneezing at frequent intervals and the eyes feel itchy and watery. In some cases, one may feel itch inside the nose, the roof of the mouth and the throat.
Forms of Rhinitis
There are two main types of rhinitis which are perennial and seasonal. As the names suggests, perennial means that the condition recurs throughout while seasonal means that the condition is intermittent and is not persistent (Kaliner, 2011). Often, seasonal rhinitis is common during summer, spring and the beginning of fall. In such cases, patients will react to spores or pollens that are carries through the air. Grass and trees which tend to be dry at the time could also trigger the condition during these seasons.
Perennial rhinitis recurs throughout the year regardless of the season. This condition is considered more serious as compared to the seasonal rhinitis. The causes of seasonal and perennial rhinitis are pretty much similar only that in the latter, the patient is more susceptible than in the former (Kaliner, 2011). In some cases, patient will have both perennial and seasonal with the condition getting more serious during specific seasons.
