Every profession is guided by ethics and moral wellbeing. Nursing as a profession is demanding, and moral and ethical soundness of practitioners is mandatory. An individual’s personal, cultural and religious beliefs contribute a lot to their philosophy and worldview. In nursing, these factors contribute to how individual nurses view the profession. In the line of duty, individual’s philosophy, values, and worldview may overlap the set unethical standard and obligation to practice thereby presenting the individual with a moral dilemma. In health care setting, the critical decision is made. The ability of a nurse to make these decisions when faced with an ethical dilemma is essential for successful service delivery. In the following paragraphs, I will explore my personal values, cultural and spiritual beliefs which affect my philosophy and worldview of nursing and influence my practice. On the same note, I will explain how ethical dilemma may arise from a conflict between my obligation to practice and my personal values, philosophy and world view. The paper will finalize with a reflection of how my view affects my decision making and behavior.
Ever since I was young, I have always been keen on doing the right thing. My values are surrounded on the belief that one should do the right thing at each and every opportunity even if it is not popular. This belief is in tandem with my Christian upbringing which stresses the importance of doing the right thing. Key steps to doing the right thing are responsible and having high integrity. To be able to discharge my duty well, I try to stick to high integrity and be responsible for all that I do. Sometimes the situation requires a compromise, but I uphold my beliefs and values to protect pledge to doing the right thing.
In my practice, I have always strived to do the right thing to give patients the best care possible. I always tell myself to care for the patients as if I were the one being cared for. Patients come to us for care; we have a moral obligation to care for the patients in the right way amid the pressure that the job exerts on us (Murray, 2010). I always strive to treat my patients with outmost respect. Respecting patients and their families always have an impact on the healing process.
