Evidence Based Practice
Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is the application of the generally accepted evidence in making clinical and decisions through the combination of clinical expertise with the latest research findings, while still considering the patients’ preferences and values (Eizenberg, 2010). The recent emphasis on evidence-based practices in the general healthcare environment have had insightful impacts on such disciplines as mental health, nursing and medicine. EBP practice is mostly stimulated by the questions which emanate from the patient encounters relating to the side effects of therapy, relevance of diagnostic tests and the prospects of diseases. This essay will discuss (EBP) as a practice being adopted in healthcare to ensure the provision of effective, efficient and safe care.
Similar to the situation in a majority of the health professions, nursing is slowly shifting to EBP from the old intuition-based standard. However, EBP is widely acceptable in areas where there is a rich library, which has medical and nursing journals. Following the movement towards EBP, numerous large entities in the US have opted to use evidence, as their guiding principle. As such, many benefits have been derived from this new trend. For instance, EBP ensures that patients get access to facts regarding effective treatment. Similarly, evidence based practices boosts the health care system by ensuring that evidenced based and informed clinical decisions are made. In this regard, EBP purposes to update nurses with the recent developments in technology, thus ensuring greater efficiency (Mashiach, Implementation of evidence-based nursing practice: nurses’ personal, 2010). These unique competencies will consequently raise the status of nurses among other professional teams. Research shows that nurses use medical journals, research, literature searches and the reports drawn from controlled experiments as sources of professional information.
Majority of the nurses have a positive view towards EBP, but they expressed certain concerns which hinder the complete application of evidence based practice. The issues include heavy workload, which hinders them from searching and adopting new ideas. As such, the major barriers to the assumption of EBP were time shortage, the use of technical jargons in research articles and failure to comprehend the meaning of the statistical terms.
Development of EBP follows five steps, which begins with the generation of a question that will provide the best answer. Secondly, the relevant information is collected through systematic search. Thirdly, a critical evaluation of the evidence is focused on its relevance, feasibility and validity. Fourthly, the research evidence gathered is integrated with the patients’ preferences and values, as well as with the clinical experience (George, 2008). Lastly, the treatment outcome of the patients is assessed.
