The Role of Obesity in the development of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Obesity is a global issue due to its ever-increasing prevalence, which eventually reduces life expectancy (Brown et al., 2019). Being obese subjects one to chances of contracting type 2 diabetes, as well as other cardiovascular diseases. In the past decade, the ratio of people with increased body mass index has doubled. About 320 million people are obese, and approximately 2.5 million people annually lose their lives due to high BMI (Denova‐Gutiérrez et al., 2020). On the other hand, 300 million adults globally have diabetes. Insulin hormone resistance characterizes Type 2 diabetes mellitus, which eventually results in the body's inability to control blood glucose leading to excessive weight gain. Approximately 80 percent of diabetes patients are suffering from obesity (Brown et al., 2019). Thus, weight loss for such individuals can go a long way in alleviating the symptoms of diabetes.
