Nursing informatics is the discipline that links nursing, informatics and information technology, which support patient care and decision-making among the health practitioners. The SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle) facilitates the development of information systems to meet the user requirements. The project manager or leader needs to manage the tasks effectively and provide a schedule of key objectives.
Planning entails defining the systems to be designed then determining the scope of the entire process as well as defining the limits on different aspects such as the human resources, materials, budget and time for the tasks. The system analysts acquire all the relevant information, while working closely with the end users and nurse manager/ leader. For the nurse infromaticts, there is a need to determine what needs to be done and if there is a problem identify the cause that necessitates a new system. Getting user feedback helps in the design and development process as it is more likely that a framework that meets the use requirements is adopted (Ehrler, Lovis & Blondon, 2019) When defining the requirements there is interaction with the system end users to define the requirements that are to be met once the project is complete. The nurses are the end users who are involved in the review and validation of the requirements.
Analysis is closely linked with the requirements of the new system and helps to meet the system objectives. The nurse informaticist plays an important role in ensuring the success of the system through analyzing what needs to change and the likely causes of system failure. The nurses are the end users who provide information on the already existing systems, and they identify the areas requiring improvement and their IT needs are considered. As the implementation team, examine the business needs, business practices and the work flows as well as whether there is a need to change the business process (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015).The informatics nursing specialists ought to develop analytical skills to evaluate whether the information systems meet the user needs and expectations. Solutions are most relevant when there is consideration of the people, processes as well as the technology that affect health care provision.
