For your session-long project, you will conduct an epidemiologic investigation of an outbreak of E. coli 0157:H7. The grade for the SLP is based on the depth of your work and your ability to analyze the information, generate hypotheses about the source of the outbreak and mode of transmission. This means that the student is focusing on those factors of importance to disease transmission, control, and prevention. A public health perspective will be advanced within the assignment.

Introduction
Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157: H7 was discovered in 1982 as a deadly human pathogen in the US. This came after an outbreak of bloody diarrhea linked to contaminated hamburger meat was reported. The US State Community Health Department observed an increase in E. coli O157: H7 infection in laboratory reports (Armstrong, Hollingsworth & Morris, 1996). This paper will discuss what could have probably accounted for the increase in the number of cases by comparing the DNA fingerprints to isolates in the samples that were analyzed in the laboratory. The paper will further explain whether the DNA typing was significant in the case.
Increase in E. coli O157: H7
Some of the reasons for an increase in E. coli O157: H7 could be an increase in the population size; the other reason could be increased infection. As a result, a common source of exposure or even an increase in specific behaviour like cooking outside, could have probably led to increased infection from other different sources (Armstrong, Hollingsworth & Morris, 1996).
DNA Fingerprint Comparison of Isolates
In the case, laboratory subtyping was used to determine if the increase of isolate of similar bacterial species resulted from a single source outbreak. The subtyping method used selected biological and genetic characteristic that differ from an isolate of the same species. For a common source outbreak, isolates come from the same parent organism. The result would show similar subtyping based on the biological and genetic isolates (Armstrong, Hollingsworth & Morris, 1996).
