Masters Prepared Nurse Interview
The ever expanding and demanding healthcare system has necessitated the need for a highly qualified nursing workforce. Nurses and healthcare givers now more than ever strive for higher education levels that instill in them the appropriate skills not only in managed care and cost efficiency but also leadership attributes that enable them to make informed healthcare decisions. The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) is a common program that many ambitious nurses have enrolled in to remain competitive and to keep up with the ever-changing health care industry. The Masters prepared nurses are in great demand because of the competency and skill levels and they have also greatly revolutionized the healthcare sector in both clinical and non-clinical roles. The paper will examine and seek to gain insight into the interplay among education, career path and opportunities through the interview of a MSN-prepared nurse.
Overview of the MSN-Nurse Career
My interviewee began her career path when she pursued a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the John Hopkins University which is one of the top tier nursing institutions in the US. She always had a passion for taking care and attending to the sick and disadvantaged from a very young age and looked forward to a career in nursing. Her academic excellence at the university didn’t go unnoticed as she was offered an internship and eventual employment at the John Hopkins hospital. Early on in her career she was attached in various departments around the hospital but she mostly enjoyed her time attending to the elderly patients. She was specifically in charge of counseling and creating exercise programs for all the patients that were recovering. Two years into her employment, she decided to further her education and knowledge with a MSN and took advantage of the hospitals flexible working hours and the online programs that it had with the John Hopkins University. The combination of the online learning platform and the evening and weekend classes enabled her to complete the MSN with specialization as a geriatric nurse practitioner in two years as opposed to the standard three years.
Present Position
The added certification and skill set made her stand out and the hospital immediately promoted her to a supervisory role the hospital’s geriatric wing. The position gave her more influence and accorded her with the opportunity to provide better care to the patients. She also was tasked with the training of her colleagues once in a while on the major aspects of the evolving health care sector.
