The quality of care is of great essence in the healthcare profession, and the IOM has offered five guidelines to help professionals in delivering high-quality health services. Among the five competencies are patient-centered care and quality improvement. Patient-centered care requires caregivers to respect and respond to patient needs. The professionals need to identify patient differences and coordinate continuous care (Greiner & Knebel, 2003). Patients should also be involved in decision-making and be provided with information on how to live a healthy life. Quality improvement requires caregivers to provide a safe and clean environment for patients and continuously test and improve the system of care to meet the needs of the patients and the wider community (Greiner & Knebel, 2003). These competencies require caregivers to include the patient and family in the planning, assessment, and implementation of the plan of care.
