Patient handoffs present a major challenge to healthcare professionals. Koppel and Telles (2013) note that handoffs are a known loophole that interferes with enhancing patient outcomes. However, the integration of technology and healthcare could help provide a solution to this problem. Healthcare information technology (HIT) solutions can best help fix many issues, especially errors resulting from patient handoffs. One particular HIT solution to be considered is the electronic patient record.
Currently, electronic health records (EHR) are in use all over the world. However, a more current version of an EHR can be adopted in an electronic patient record (EPR). An EPR can be made to work around the clock, collecting every piece of information shared or updated on the EHR. After collecting this information, an EPR should share newly updated information with healthcare professionals who are starting their shift. It can also be designed to highlight crucial information that professionals in the new shift should be wary of.
Rationale
Nurses “require information that is accessible, good quality, up-to-date, manageable, and relevant” (Ricks and Ham, 2015).
