The nursing field is rewarding but is challenging. Some problems are vital and they need a universal legislation to address them at the regional, state and national. Inter-professional relationships; feelings and conflicting views of disrespect cause conflicts at the work place. They arise between co-workers, administrators, nurses and their patients, and partner physicians. This is also bullying in the workplace CITATION Tra13 \l 1033 (Davis, 2013).
Bullying at the work place has consequences for nurses and patients. It adds to nurse absenteeism, high stress a work, declining job satisfaction, and staff shortage in America. Relationships between colleagues strain such that the patients under the affected nurses do not receive adequate care or concern. Among the factors that contribute to these problems include bullying. Therefore, there is need to mitigate these problems at the organizational level to the regional, state and national level.
Bullying involves plain behavior, it may occur publicly or privately and it may involve a staff member and an authority figure. It takes many forms in a work place; it may be relational aggression where it is subtle and it occurs among colleagues. It may be extreme such that it involves physical aggression directed at the nurse. Relational aggression includes behavior such as manipulation, use of threats, failure to assist with a patient, gossip or non-verbal communication such as telling secrets, leaving others out of conversations or activities, rolling of eyes, or criticisms CITATION Sou12 \l 1033 (Sousa, 2012).
This type of aggression can also be online, where it involves forwarding of private emails, embarrassing other nurses on social media outlets, hurtful videos, or blogging about other nurses. Relational aggression often target new staff, nursing students, and new nursing graduates. Relational aggression is the often used method of bullying.
Research show that there is a substantial relationship between bullying and stress at work or high employee turnover. The economic implication for employee turnover is the cost of recruiting replacement nurses, orienting them and the time wasted. This also contributes to longer working hours for other nurses and burnout experienced. Research reveals that 65% of new nurses leave within their first six months when hired at their first nursing positions as a result of direct mistreatment from other colleagues CITATION SSt10 \l 1033 (Sheridan, 2010).
Institute of Safe Medication Practices conducted a survey on whether the hospital staff have experienced bullying such as disrespectful behavior. They received answers that workplace bullying is prevalent. Twenty percent of the participants acknowledged that they had witnessed bullying often. Another twenty percent said that they had dealt with the problem regularly. Other demeaning behavior includes; slighting due to religion, race, or appearance, spreading humiliating rumors, and throwing objects.
