Is infanticide in India a new 'epidemic'?
Infanticide is understood as the intentional killing of an infant. Infanticide in India has really become a new epidemic; female infanticide in this nation is widespread. Allowing baby girls to starve to death or killing them in India is something unimaginable, but it is happening even in the present day. This is a very disturbing and shocking behaviour. In post-colonial India, the selective killing of female foetuses is a major issue that can be considered as an epidemic. As a result of this practice, there is a serious consequence on gender balance within the Indian population.
According to the Indian Association for Women’s Studies report of 1998 as indicated in the articles, 10,000 female foetuses are killed annually. Another study found that 78,000 foetuses were killed from the year 1978 to the year 1983, or roughly 13,000 yearly. These female foetuses were aborted after amniocentesis was used as sex discrimination test. It is worth mentioning that these differing figures clearly suggest that this genocide has in fact become a barely discernible crime against women. Moreover, these statistics are an indication of the proportion of this violence.
The other indicator of this crime is certainly India’s declining sex ratio. In the census of 1901, there were 972 females for every 1000 males. The census of 1981 showed that for every 935 females there are 1000 men, while the 1994 census showed a ratio of 927 females for every 1000 men.
