Many patient experience delays and feel frustrated when staffs try to inform them about certain payment after paying for the services. Hospitals use computerized systems to handle most of the financial transactions. With many patients paying out of pocket fees for health services, the most challenging part many hospitals face is to develop the most efficient processes of collecting revenues at the point of service (Rauscher & Wheeler, 2010). To minimize billing errors, the best financial policy is to implement a credit card file program because most clients can access electronic billing services. Credit card file programs are one of the effective processes for the hospital to track and collect payment to avoid financial losses caused by unpaid bills (Rauscher & Wheeler, 2010).
Financial Implications
To implement the credit card file programs, the hospital will incur three processing costs; these are interchange, assessment and markup costs. Interchange and assessment are non-negotiable costs that will be incurred for processing payments. These are fees the hospital will pay the banks that will issue credit cards including card companies like Visa and MasterCard (Cleverley & Cleverley, 2017). While the markup cost will be incurred when the bank processor handles the hospital transaction, therefore it is important to analyze all transaction processors in the market and identify the one offering the lowest charges. (Cleverley & Cleverley, 2017). The hospital will need a secure gateway provider to relay the collected data to the clients account in the bank. The gateways are important because they provide instant information about the client’s financial status and the gateway will assist the hospital to transmit data by sending an approval or denial code to the hospital computers (Cleverley & Cleverley, 2017).
