In the modern-day world, technology plays a critical role in everyday life. This has prompted players in different sectors of the economy to adopt technology in their industries. The result has been an improvement in the quality of goods and services produced. Within the healthcare industry, technology has brought about many changes. The health information system was introduced to ease the management of patient data. Due to technology, hospitals are now equipped with better and more advanced equipment. This paper explains how technology has affected the evolution of the healthcare industry. Also, it discusses the benefits and challenges presented by implementing technology in a healthcare setting.
A century ago, doctors could not perform surgery without using crude and unadvanced tools and equipment. Also, it was hard to determine the origin and location of cancers in the body. However, due to technology, doctors can use equipment as advanced as lasers to perform delicate surgery. Through electroencephalography (EEG), practitioners can monitor brain activity and locate tumors (Morilla et al., 2017). These are just a few of the clinical changes that have resulted from technology.
The management of patient data has been a challenge within the healthcare industry. This has been made worse by the complex nature of the industry. However, today, providers can manage patient data in a single database (Morilla et al., 2017). This allows providers and practitioners to access and share patient information. Health information systems have also been beneficial to patients. Through health information systems, patients now have access to health data, making them aware of their doctors’ decisions and how they affect them.
