Nurse practitioners and other medical health workers go hand in hand in executing the right intervention to the health status of the patient (Stewart, 2001). For them to perform medical tasks, they need to be aware of the patient's health status and stability so that they can plan their health practices that are appropriate for the patient.
One way to determine a patient's health stability is through the health-illness continuum. The Health-illness continuum is a kind of measurement tool that determines a person's wellness or illness. To give a brief background, Dr. John Travis had developed key wellness concepts that assess individual wellness in a more educated way (Strohecker, 2015). One of these concepts is the health-wellness continuum that puts our health status into degrees as a measure of severity or health. It goes from pre-mature death to high-level wellness. In between, there are disability, symptoms, and signs for the treatment paradigm, and awareness, education, and growth towards high-level wellness (Strohecker, 2015).
Such a concept plays a significant role not just in health interventions but also in human experience. It is already a given that the continuum helps identify a person's health condition, be it physically, mentally, or emotionally. However, the continuum could also educate patients in the aspect of their conditions. Part of the continuum is education and growth that allows a person to maintain high-level wellness (Strohecker, 2015). Medical practitioners would always make the patients aware of their conditions in the most understandable way (Suchman, & Matthews, 1988). That is, they use layman's terms, simpler logic, and analogies that are appropriate for the patient. This method enables patients to comprehend their conditions and become more aware of their health status. Their awareness would contribute to their growth and eventual healing. It is because they will be more careful and cautious about their health and well being. Thus, the concept of the health-illness continuum creates a collaborative performance of both the medical practitioners and the patients.
