Relevant Background Information:

This assessment will examine the pathologies, diagnostic testing, patient presentations, and treatments, including medication use, for conditions related to the immune system and the nervous system.  The knowledge and skills learned would allow the student to interpret and apply basic medical information such as lab work, prescription orders, and patient signs and symptoms to a specific pathology/disease that they would see within a patient’s medical chart. 

 

Assessment Purpose:

To prepare the student to interpret basic medical terminology, abbreviations and calculations as it pertains to pharmacology.  In addition, the student will be able to identify signs, symptoms, and lab/diagnostic results associated with various system related pathologies/diseases.

With this knowledge one can prevent prescription misuse and safely take the medication.
The medical information on the prescription label is also significant and should be comprehended for that specific medication. One should identify the following 7 items on a prescription label. One, there should identify instructions on when and how to administer the medicine (Rx Outreach, 2016). Two, the number of tablets or pills should be indicated. Knowing the number of the pills can allow one to keep track of the pills left and how much one has taken. Three, the number of prescription refills should be available so that one can refill their prescription by providing the RX or contacting the pharmacy. Four, the name of the Medicine should be on the prescription label. This will allow one to track the medicines they are taking so they can easily share those details with their pharmacist or doctor. Five, the prescription label should have warnings. These warnings can tell the patient what substances or activities to avoid while under that medication and the possible side effects. Six, the expiry date should be present to allow one properly dispose expired prescriptions. Lastly, the dosage should be present since it enables the patient to know the strength and size of the medicine.
The seven items are significant as they relate to the 8 rights of administering drugs safely by making sure there are safe medication preparation as well as administration (Pape, 2003). These rights involve patient, medication, dose, route, time, documentation, reason and response. The rights minimize medication errors thereby keeping the patients safe. These rights are established goals and anticipated outcome of safe medication practices for which practitioners must accept accountability and make failsafe ways to achieve them (Institute for Safe Medication Practices, 2007).
