The State scope-of-practice (SOP) regulations provide guidelines on the actions and procedures that could be performed by healthcare providers. Critical to the discussion is the fact that the regulations establish the range of services and the extent to which nurses could deliver their services. It is important to note that the SOPs vary from State to State. For instance, advanced practice registered nurses in California can only provide physician functions after a collaboration arrangement with a physician. However, Dower, Moore, and Langelier (2013) argue that SOPs unnecessarily limit the provision of healthcare services to Americans. It follows that allowing nurses to provide services based on their qualifications, but without physician supervision could benefit people from California. Therefore, a law should be put in place to allow nurse practitioner autonomy in California.
Background
To begin with, advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) take a lot of time and years of experience to achieve their qualifications. Further, the American population is aging and has access to affordable care implying that the number of people with complicated conditions is on the increase. Consequently, the demand for access to healthcare services is expected to increase. This explains why the Institute of Medicine produced a report suggests the removal of SOPs citing that APRNs should be permitted to practice their training fully (Martsolf, Auerbach, and Arifkhanova, 2015). The same author reveals that the National Governors Association encourages full practice of APRNs citing that such a policy would increase efficiencies in the healthcare industry. Stange (2014) reveals that States that provide nurse practitioner autonomy, have efficient healthcare services than their counterparts. Above all, American States such as Colorado, Oregon, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Arizona already allow nurse practitioner autonomy.
